It is recommended you use Google Cultural Institute to help you on this assignment or you may use the websites of museums, cultural institutions, or other academic online resources. If you use Google Cultural Institute, register at the site. This will allow you to select images and create your own gallery. On the Google Cultural Institute pages, browse and search images and save them by clicking on the plus sign located above the image, near the title. Once you have your selection of images, click on “Create your own galleries…” or “My Galleries” to create a gallery using the images you have saved. When creating your gallery, you must add a description to each work to fulfill the requirements of this assignment; do this by clicking “Edit” under each image when in your gallery. Finally, you must make your gallery public to share it; do this by clicking on “Private” and then copy the url of your gallery page from the address bar and submit this to your instructor.
If you do not use the Google Cultural Institute to create a gallery, you may use another presentation tool for this assignment, such as PowerPoint® or Prezi. If you do so, make sure to include correct APA formatting to cite each image and resource, and include your descriptions in the speaker notes or in another document.
Submit your assignment using the Assignment Files tab.
Option C (This option is tailored for Education majors.)

This tutorial contains paper based on Option AMaya Lin’s Vietnam Veterans
We have another Paper based on Option BCompare and contrast Michelangelo’s Pietà and Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa
We use language in expressive ways to underscore our meaning when we speak. The arts also have their own language used by artists and performers in a variety of unique and expressive ways. The language of the visual arts includes elements of composition such as line, color, form, and repetition. Visual artists use each of these elements and many other factors of composition to create unique works. Learning the language of the arts is one way of gaining a deeper understanding of the ideas that exist in a painting, a sculpture, or a work of architecture.
What is it that we communicate when we speak to one another? Often, we share stories, ideas, or just how we are feeling. The arts use their own language in a similar way to share ideas and the values that are important to the society in which the artwork was made.
For your Week 2 Assignment, choose one of the options listed below to develop your understanding of the visual arts and how they communicate.
Option A
Research Maya Lin’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Théodore Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa.
Describe each work in terms of its elements of composition–what is its shape, color, material, and so forth.
Describe the work in terms of its symbolic significance–what was Maya Lin’s purpose in designing the memorial as she did? Additionally, what does the work say about our society in terms of what we value and how we choose to commemorate or respond to national events? Answer the same questions for Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa.
Submit your assignment in one of the following formats:
- A 350- to 700-word paper
- A 4- to 7-minute podcast or video
Option B
Compare and contrast Michelangelo’s Pietà and Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, two works from the High Renaissance.
Describe the elements of composition for each.
Explain what was unique about the artistic choices made by da Vinci and Michelangelo that has led to their continuing popularity.
Describe what you believe to be the ideas or values present in each work. In other words, what philosophies and interests of the artists led to each creating this work and creating it in the manner in which they did?
Submit your assignment in one of the following formats:
- A 350- to 700-word paper
- A 4- to 7-minute podcast or video
Option C
Research Roman aqueducts, such as the Pont du Gard near Nîmes, France included in your text.
Compare Roman aqueducts to your city’s own water management system. What are the similarities and differences? Include a description of the structural elements of Roman aqueducts in your comparison.
Describe what you believe Roman aqueducts say about ancient Roman society in terms of what they valued and how they worked.

I think we can all agree that our day-to-day experience might be a little less interesting. The music we listen to, the television and films we watch, and even the way we design and decorate our homes are directly influenced by the visual and performing arts; even if we aren’t aware of it.
- What would life be like without music, dance, painting, theatre, or cinema?
Consider your own experiences with the visual and performing arts. Perhaps you saw great art in a museum, or you were in the audience for a play, film, or concert.
- Describe your experience, including your emotional connection to what you saw or heard.

Often, when a person is shown a painting or sculpture, they can have an immediate reaction such as “I like it” or “I hate it!” But the real question is why do we feel the way we do? Studying the elements of visual art can help you make a more informed and interesting response. Also, knowing a little about the development of artistic style through the centuries helps you put your opinions in context.
Pick at least one of the elements of composition and explain why it is important when describing a work of art, and cite some examples of painting or sculpture that emphasize this element.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
Music and dance are similar because both are able to communicate ideas and emotions without the use of words. In the absence of a vocal part, musicians create sounds that evoke certain emotions. Composers and performers do this through different elements of music like melody, harmony, and rhythm. Dancers can also communicate emotions, ideas, or even a story through their movements, and these movements are often tied to musical elements like rhythm.
Imagine that you are composing a ballet. Pick an emotion that you want to show the audience.
- Describe how you would use certain elements of music to create the sounds of that emotion.
- How would you choreograph the dancers to align with your musical ideas?

Movies and stage plays, also known as cinema and theatre, are probably the most accessible of the performing arts. In both forms, a story is portrayed using similar methods or elements such as actors and actresses, costumes, sets, scripts, and lighting. Both film and theatre producers are able to bring a story to life using these elements, and their artistic choices can enhance the drama of the story.
Think of one of your favorite movies and consider how different artistic choices were made in the film’s production.
- Which elements were most effective and why?
- Could your film be turned into a stage play? Why or why not?

ARTS 100 Week 5 Discussion The Arts in Schools
Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
It is common these days to hear that the arts in the public schools are losing funding, or have been cut altogether. What was once a regular part of a well-rounded education, is now increasingly marginalized by those who say the arts serve no practical purpose.
Imagine that you heard that arts funding is about to be cut out of the school budget in your district. You feel strongly that the school district should keep the arts in the schools, and you are prepared to address the school board in defense of the arts.
What would you say to persuade the board that the arts are necessary for a child’s education?
How would such an education support the local community?
