CIS 105 CIS105 CIS/105 M&M Project

Master foods USA, Manufacturer of Mars, INC, M&M’s candy, contracted Strayer University to provide third party quality control investigation and reporting of a specific plant packaging process and practice.

The purpose of this study was to make inferences about plain M&M 1.69 oz. bags. Master foods USA prescribed color proportion for a 1.69 ounce bag of plain M&M’s is 24% blue, 20% orange, 16% green, 14% yellow and 13% brown.

The average number of candies per bag is at least 54. This report will show the statistical theory used in the quality control sampling and reports the data found.

Part 1 Sampling Method

There were 13 member in the class and each member of the class purchased three 1.69 oz. of plain M&Ms. Each counted the number of M&Ms by color in each of the three bags and contributed his information to the class data base.

All of the bags contributed by all of the students created the sample. Figure 1 shows the results from four three-bag samples from four random samplers.

Figure 2 below shows the amount of each color sampled and that 3364 were sampled overallFigure 2To calculate the proportion of each candy color, each bags sum was divided by the total number of candies sampled.

For Example the number of blue candies is 697 divided by 3364 is .207194 or 20.72% rounded up. The mean is the average number of each color in each bag and the sample mean for the total sampled equals the average number of candies in each bag.

Figure 3 show all of the calculated proportions for the this project
