Private versus Public Prisons
In the early 1980s, states were beginning to be overrun by litigation set forth by prisoners due to a change in interpretation of what rights inmates had.
A majority of the litigations were about overcrowding being a form of cruel and unusual punishment and civil rights violations.
Recently the Department of Justice came out and said federal prisons should begin to phase out privatized because there was not a significant cost savings and, according to the Inspector General, they cannot guarantee the same level of safety and security as government run prisons can. (Smith, 2016).

Private versus Public Prisons

(Smith, 2016).
To Privatize or to Not Privatize
In an article by Richard Seiter (2014), he attempts to dispel some possible myths and misconceptions about privatized prison systems.
He first goes into his background, telling the readers his long history with the prison system, at both state and federal levels, going from being a guard to a warden and eventually working for Corrections Corporations of America (CCA),
the largest for-profit prison company in the United States. Seiter (2014), lists off five widely used arguments against the private prison business:
Private prisons are not accountable to the public.
The profit motive of private corrections encourages cutting comers that can reduce quality.
Private prison companies lobby for longer sentences.
Private corrections facilities do not offer adequate inmate programming and are not as effective as public prisons.
The profit motive of the private sector undermines safety in facilities.Seiter goes into depth about his personal experience with all of these topics.
Granted he makes avery compelling argument but the reader needs to remember this is his experience with the largest for-profit prison system. Working for CCA as an advisor and eventually as the Chief Correctional Officer,
he oversaw the operations of all their facilities (sixty-five prisons, detention facilities, and jails) which housed 70,000 inmates, supervised 17,000 staff, and was responsible for over $1 billion in operating expenses annually” (Seiter, 2014).
While reading this article, the one thing which I kept coming back to,was this is a “for-profit” business. Just like any other business such as Wal-Mart or Starbucks, they wantto make money
