Case Project 7-1: Recommending a Network Solution

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of what you recommend.

In this case, I would recommend something called Workgroup. What Workgroup is, is a peer-to-peer network where a group of computers or devices running on a Windows program that are connected to the same LAN that can share files and folders to the connected devices with each other.

This can include documents and printers. With Workgroup, there is no limit to the number of devices that can join. As with anything, there are advantages and disadvantages to having Workgroup. The following table explains what they are:

Advantages

It is easy to install and configure and is designed for LAN networks like small businesses.

Perform the best and with less computers.

Files and folders can be shared with peers in the same network.

A Workgroup name on the hardware is completely independent

The Microsoft OS allows for resources in order to set up a Workgroup.

The settings are in the properties window in the system.

Net command can also be utilized.

Better management with larger networks categorized in the Workgroup.

Disadvantages

Workgroup security is not quite as strong as adomain.

They are not suggested for transmitting networks or sensitive data.

No centralized management of the network

As you can see, there are many more advantages than disadvantages in using Workgroup. While it seems that there is less security using workgroup over a domain, for example, it does not require the use of a server to function.

I.Verify the installation of the shared component. To do this:

Go to the Startbutton on bottom left of the screen and choose Control Panel

Open the Network and Internetoption and choose Network and Sharing Center

Choose the Change Adapter Settingson the left side of the screen

Right-click on Local Connectionand then select Propertieson the bottom of the drop-down list

Below where it says This connection uses the following items, locate the Fileand Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks option from the list

If this option is unavailable in the list:

1.Click on the Installbutton on the bottom, select the Serviceoption and then choose Add

2.Choose the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, option and then click the OKbutton

3.Then Closethe window. Restart the computer if necessary
