Establishing a filtering process that identifies and blocks cyber attacks is important when itcomes to networking traffic. A network boarder is imperative to the security of a network. One of the best uses of a network border is at the firewall and the Internet router.

Case Project 11-1: Border Locations

Create a document that explains network borders to the judges and the border points you plan to examine for security.

The diagram below shows how the network border where the Internet router and firewall arebroken out to its separate devices. One of the primary focuses is on inbound traffic.It is important for the routers to do their primary job, pas traffic through.

There are some exceptions where security and traffic concerns might require basic blocking on the router. Keep these few points in mind:

It is not necessary to add an ACL (Access Control List) for every IP address that looks suspicious

Devices inside the border router, outside of firewall interface, and outside of the firewall need to be protected.

The bogons (a list that represents an entire class of private and reserved IP addresses) need to be filtered.

Any inbound traffic sourced from your personal IP address needs to be blocked.

When it comes to the firewall, it should be a little more detailed. It is important to first lock access to the firewall. You should not have any unauthorized users with access to the firewall.There are two principles for firewall filtering:

Default Deny: This entails denying any traffic that you personally want blocked. Theability to choose what you permit is designed for protection.

Everything has a Label: If the administrator of the firewall is replaced, a newadministrator will need to have access and know what and why certain precautions weretaken.

Preparing a Seminar About Attacks

The judges ask you to give all court employees a short seminar about malicious attacks oncomputers and networks. Prepare some notes you can use in your presentation.

Network attacks are considered an intrusion on a network that analyzes and collectsinformation in order to exploit any vulnerabilities, access resources or to basically just gatherpersonal information and data from a network. There are two forms of attacks:

Passive Attack: The purpose of this attack is to simply gather information from a systemwithout altering or disabling it.

Active Attack: This type of attack takes place when resources or data are altered,disabled or destroyed. This can occur either outside of a company or inside thecompany walls
