I highly recommend using both identification and authentication. I am using my office building as an example. I work in a small office so we know who is all suppose to be there.

Everyone in our office has two cards on them. The first card is a key card that is used to operate the elevator for our building. It must be swiped and then you can choose the floor that your need to go to.
Each card is only program to grant access to the floors that you are authorizedto be on, as the building is a multi-use building. If you do not have a key card then you have to see the security officer in the front lobby and they will call to the floor you wish to go and have
