How and why are people physically attracted to other people, and to some specific people more than to others?

Physical Attraction: Psychology

Physical attraction is a complex game. Romance and sexuality have always been and remain some of the most complicated and highly mythicized aspects of human behavior, and psychologists and neuroscientists constantly seek to develop and refine their conceptions of its mechanisms.

From an evolutionary view, our choice of attraction may seem simple—we seek the best combination of our genes with another’s to produce the most resilient offspring possible.

But when we examine attraction, as with every characteristic of human behavior, we must examine both objective and subjective angles in order to gain the most wholesome analysis possible.

Attraction, after all, intrigues and perplexes each of us, and so the confusion must be grounded psychologically in a variety of variables as well as evolutionarily—biological, social, and possibly cultural. For what purpose are we physically attracted to other people?

A purely objective answer would be that we seek attraction with the goal of reproducing and therefore passing on our genes into the next generation. Sex, according to Sigmund Freud, is one of several basic human drives, and so in his view we naturally scour for it as an animalistic necessity (Sigmund).

With this conception, the science of attraction would most likely be rooted solely in biological or physiological processes—just the same as most animals (Hock 159). However, can this possibly be true? Physical attraction, in a contemporary use of the phrase, doesn’t necessarily have a basis in reproduction (Hock 159).

Many couples, for example, are attracted to one another even when they know that they are physically unable to reproduce. So, yes, attraction may demonstrate an underlying desire for sex, but the same cannot always be said of reproduction. Therefore
