Shakespearean villains are most often liars and manipulators, always focused on bettering themselves through deceiving others: but there is a twist. Most of the plans these villains and evildoers are thwarted by protagonists and heroes.
Iago is one exception to the catalogue of defeated villains. He is successful because he has an effective plan, he can deceive anyone, and he can use spontaneous events to his advantage.A villain is considered “successful” if their grand plan actually turns out.
Oftentimes, it isthe job of a protagonist to stop the villain’s plan, which, as a result, makes many villains unsuccessful. Iago, however, is a special case. Compared to other antiheroes in Shakespearean plays, Iago actually accomplishes his goal.
For example, Edmund, in King Lear, planned to lie and deceive his way to becoming the Earl of Gloucester; unfortunately, his plans were thwarted, and he was killed (King Lear).
He follows the standard villain archetype that gets so very close to his end goal, yet ends up defeated. On the other hand, I ago planned to simply be “evened with him [Othello], wife for wife” (Othello2.1.296), which he later accomplishes when both wives are dead.
Since Iago accomplished his goal he is successful, as compared to Edmund, who did not, and is therefore unsuccessful. Now, it is worthy to note that Iago is captured and revealed. But does that make him unsuccessful? In short—no.
His actions while captured make him even more successful. Iago states, “Demand me nothing. What you know, you know.
From this time forth I will never speak word” (Oth.5.2.303-304). He has been captured and stabbed, but yet he continues to resist Othello, saying “What you know, you know” and refusing to tell any more about his plans and how he did what he did.
Most often, a villain will be captured, and then proceed to tell the world his great plan to rule everything: not Iago. He continues his plan, refusing to abandon it, making him very effective. Beyond just getting even with Othello on a marital basis, Iago manages to put himself one step above Othello: Iago is alive, after all
