Hitler and Pathos
Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary defines rhetoric as the art of speaking or writing effectively and persuasively. In Aristotelian rhetoric, there are three main categories that must be present for persuasion to be effective: logos, pathos and ethos. Logos is the logical appeal.
It usesreasoning to persuade the audience. Pathos utilizes people’s emotions to persuade them and is arguably the most effective of the three categories.
Finally, ethos works based on the author’s credibility and ethics. Through the use of these three approaches, Aristotle believed any rhetorician would be able to persuade their audience in most situations. (“A General Summary of Aristotle’s Appeals . . .”)Rhetoric is neither good nor evil, despite what many people in American society believe.
As Stanford’s course page on the subject states, “rhetoric as such is a neutral tool that can be used by persons of virtuous or depraved character.” One of the most widely known examples of rhetoric being used by a depraved character is the persuasion Adolph Hitler used during the Nazi regime.
In this essay, I will examine how Hitler effectively used pathos to persuade thousands of people to follow him.Dr. Joseph Goebbels states in a paper on Hitler’s rhetoric there are two kinds of speakers, those who use reasoning and those who are passionate about their topic.
People who make speeches rarely motivate their audience to action; they purely educate their audience of their views (Goebbels). Although Hitler used both logos (logic) and pathos (emotions, like passion) in
