Montresor, “The Cask of Amontillado”

In “The Cask of Amontillado”, Edgar Allen Poe crafts Montresor, his narrator, as a character well versed in carefully considered morbidity. Montresor, who writes in the first person of the plan and execution of the downfall of his “friend”, Fortunato, is both cunning and resolute (Poe 3).

He creates a plan from which he cannot err, and it is with an almost religious attentiveness that he ensures it is carried through to completion. While we hardly receive any physical description of his character, Poe successfully develops Montresor’s identity through action, dialogue, and internal thoughts and narration.

He is a character who speaks one thing, but which Poe, through narration, allows us to see through to meaning another. He is full of contradictions—consumed by revenge, yet cool and quick with his future victim. Almost entirely absent in moral intelligence, he excels in clever manipulation.

And so, in contrasting Montresor’s internal and external selves in thought and in dialogue, the reader is able to formulate andassess a complete study of his self—a largely indistinguishable man, whose motivations wholly overwhelm his ethical reasoning.

The story begins with an earnest denouncement of the wrongs committed by Fortunato, and immediately the readers are allowed to glimpse Montresor’s internal attitudes through Poe’s narration. His thoughts are casual but direct—he will redress Fortunato’s insult, properly, and he will do so “with impunity” (Poe 3).

Here he addresses the reader directly, and with this “you” we understand that Poe’s character is
