What is a Community?
Throughout the beginning of this semester, the Concepts of Community class has been studying the characteristics of other communities through the works of Plato, David Hackett Fischer and Adam Smith.
By gaining knowledge about these communities and accessing their principles for their justness and goodness and sustainability, we are better able to come to a formation of our own perfectly just and good and sustainable community.
In addition to designing our own community, studying other communities allows us to better understand our own thoughts and values about the society we live in. In the following essay, I will discuss the social structure, economic matters and education ways of previous societies and come to a conclusion about which I would like to see in my own community.
In examining the social structures of other communities, one must not forget to look at Plato’s mythical society and his Myth of Metals as set about in his book Republic.
To form a social structure that Plato believes is just, good and sustainable, he proposes to tell future citizensa story that goes as such, “Although all of you in the city are brothers, when the god was forming you, he mixed gold into those of you who are capable of ruling, which is why they are the most honorable; silver into the auxiliaries; and iron and bronze into the farmers and other craftsmen” (Plato 100).
In this way Plato sets about three social classes that are separated by their function incommunity based on their natural ability and are in a hierarchy to one and other. Following this statement, Plato goes on to discuss his views on the heredity of this system, stating “for the most
