Art Censorship: Disturbance and Compromise
Art is one of the most powerful and ancient forms of human expression. The Italian Renaissance beginning in the 14th century saw the elevation of painting and other art forms from mere craft to exalted profession.
The Impressionists, meeting in Paris cafés in the mid-1800s, diverged from the accepted public perception of art—in their wake, new and lasting experiments were made in color, form, and process.
The birth of photography also drove unprecedented change; beyond the affordable and popular tintypes of the American Civil War, artists married scientific, objective technique with bold creative expression. Of course, art has existed for far longer and extends far beyond the Western world.
It has always, though, had a knack for reflecting, perpetuating, and guiding change in the society from which it arises. And with expression—rapidly changing, dynamic, and varied—arises conflict in opinion, and from there, attempts at suppression.
Censorship in visual art is now more than ever in the public eye. In a worldconnected instantly by an Internet connection, small controversies can, and do, escalate quickly. It is also vocal—nothing can offend, outrage, demean, and scandalize as quicklyand effectively as an image.
But if an image is offensive to the public, is its censorship justified? Or is freedom of expression absolute? For some, yes. For others, disturbing imagery is a threat, and so the grounds for suppression are legitimized. In many ways, the conversation over censorship in art is as complex as the visual art itself.
Therefore, if we are to analyze the discussion surrounding art censorship, we must look first to ideals and second to realities—as in the study of art history, context is everything.
Those opposed to art censorship believe firmly in the ideals of the absolute freedom of expression that is every citizen’s natural right.
From this viewpoint, even the most obscene, racist, or sexist imagery may be preserved or displayed before the public eye, while the creator remains protected (although probably disrespected and possibly abhorred).
It could also be argued that fear of censorship curtails an artist’s freedom and innovation in the creation of an art piece or collection (“Censorship”). Furthermore, it is the concern of those opposed to censorship that the suppression of artistic expression, once begun, will not know its place to stop.
Some even believe that continued censorshipin American culture will eventually shun the avant-garde altogether, leaving us with narrow, conventional, and stagnant visual expression (Quigley).
The solution, therefore, is to protect all legal creation of art. The National Art Education Association (NAEA) is defiantly anti-censorship, and in its letter, “Censorship and the Arts,” it explains,The freedom to create and to experience works of art is essential to our democracy.
At present this freedom is under attack. Private groups and
