In his famous doctrine Lyell popularizes a combination of James Hutton’s theory of Gradualism with a few ideas of his own calling it Uniformitarianism.The presumption that the changes in the Earths crust during geological history resulted from the action of continuous and uniform process.

This theory directly challenged that of the Church’s,which was Catastrophism; the speculation that the Earth surface was shaped by sudden,short-lived,violent events over a span of around 6000 years.

This dispute of ideas eventually led to Uniformitarianism becoming a paradigm shift in terms of how people of the 1800s viewed the history and age of the Earth.Charles Lyell’s Principles of Geologyis still known today as one of the most influential books concerning the science of Geology.

Charles Lyell was born on the 14 of November in 1797 on his family’s estate in Scotland,His father was a renowned botanist and a Latin translator,known for his work with Vita Nuova and Convito,

Thus he basically had an easy life and upbringing,Unfortunately as Charles grew up he suffered from poor eyesight,which would later hinder him from his studies to be a barrister,In 1816 he was admitted to Exeter College in Oxford to study legal acts and law,

During his college years,he met professor Dr,Buckland,who first introduced him to geology,a subject that stayed with him for the rest of his life,After graduating with an M,A,in legal studies in 1821,Lyell worked as Barrister and study geology as a hobby for six years,Sadly dueto his poor eyesight he resigned as a Barrister and devoted his work solely to Geology,
