Among those persons who opposed Darwin’s theory of evolution, some of the more vocal were also more notable scientists, philosophers, and popular minds at the time.

A few of the main ideas presented against Darwin’s theory were often in regards to the amount of evidence present to back up Darwin’s theory, or the methodology with which Darwin supports and explores this idea.

Adam Sedgewich felt that Darwin’s process for investigation and presentation of his ideas were not inductive. He stated that Darwin’s theory of evolution was not based on a series of acknowledged facts pointing to a general conclusion and that it was not a proposition out of facts, “Logically and of course including them.” (Darwin, 365)

He agrees that many animals are alike species though he states that species have remained constant for thousands of years, and that even if millions of years past they would not change.

However he contradicts himself in saying that species would only remain the same so long as their environment did not change and the conditions remained the same. Sedgwich also not only opposes Darwin’s
