Andy Goldsworthy is a British sculptor, photographer, and environmentalist who creates site-specific pieces, including land art, that are located within natural settings. He is most knownfor his ephemeral art though he has also created several permanent commission pieces, and is generally well known as the founder of modern rock balancing.
His inspiration of nature is obvious within each of his pieces due both to the materials he utilizes and to the settings where and from which each piece is created. Born in Scotland in 1956 his photographed sculptures, and permanent stone and clay pieces, continue to find places in museums, worldwide to this day.
Andy’s father was a professor of applied mathematics who raised his son in a house right on the edge of the green belt in Scotland, and from age 13 he worked for several years on a local farm.
In 1974 Andy started attending Art College where he began his explorations of creating sculptures from nature and using photography to document and communicate his projects.
Most of his creations are described as ephemeral and are made from, and feature, natural materials including but not limited to: brightly-colored flowers, icicles, leaves, mud, pinecones, snow, stone, twigs, and thorns.
Most of his designs are not meant to last and are built within the space of hours, viewed, photographed, and then destroyed again by nature within a matter of minutes or seconds. Andy’s theory for this is that, what causes his art’s life causes its death. (Andy Goldsworthy, Rivers and Tides)
As Andy was just starting in art college he found that within the walls of the school he felt very secure but that when he went outside thewalls, and into nature, there was a “breathless energy” present. He puts forward that “Total control can be the death of the work.” (Andy Goldsworthy, Rivers and Tides)
Being near the coast he ventured to the beach to begin his experimental learning and from the beach he began with trying to understand the motions created when a river meets and mixes with the sea, and from there came to use the tides as a measurement of time.
Often his structures are created on the beach when the tide is low and when it returns the art is reclaimedby the sea. When asked how he feels when the waters destroy the sculptures he says that he
