“Art Out Of Hardship”
Some struggles push oneself to the edge of what it means to be human. When those events take place many fall right off the edge. Then there are those who fight with everything they have. Sometimes everything they have is turned out in the form of art; Art which becomes their hope, their strength, and their escape.
Sometimes, in the depths of struggle, beauty beats its way into the world regardless, and art is produced out of hardship.Dr. Karel Fleischmann was born in Klatovy, Bohemia in 1987 into a Jewish family.
His father was a graphic artist and illustrator by profession, which meant that any and all artistic interest, was strongly supported by his family from a young age. After graduating secondary school however, his parents wanted a more stable profession for their son and urged him to pursue a medical career.
Following his parent’s advice he enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine in Prague, a huge cultural center where his love of the arts only flourished.
During his time in Prague, Karel involved himself in many artistic groups which often were centered on applied arts such as painting, illustration, and graphic art though also included professional writing and poetry. After becoming a licensed physician Karel left Prague and set up his own private dermatology office in Ceske Budejovice.
While there he again became highly involved in the art community by founding the art group Linie(meaning Line) in 1931. This group played a major role in the Czech modernism that took place between the two world wars.
During this time until 1939, Karel became and active graphic artist and published several of his works including paintings, poetry, essays, and short novels (Jewishmuseum.cz).In 1939 the Nazi’s began their invasion of the European countries including Czechoslovakia .
By the end of this year laws has been enacted that restricted and prevented Fleischmann from practicing as a physician.
When given the chance to emigrate and flee the country he decided against leaving, believing that he would be “Abandoning his homeland during its hour of need”, and chose instead to give his passport to a friend (Pg 130, Fleischmann: Artist and Physician).
Dr. Karel Fleischmann was apprehended by Nazi soldiers on April 18th, 1942 and transported to Terezin Ghetto. Terezin Ghetto was a part of the larger concentration camp Theresienstadt, and was planned by the Nazi’s to be no more than a place for the Czech Jews to be held before they could be deported to death camps for extermination.
