Field Experience Report: Needwood Middle School Stacy Taylor Liberty University

Setting

Needwood Middle School is one of four middle school within the Glynn County School System. During the regular school calendar, the student population of over 700 is the most diverse in the county.

“The demographic makeup of the students at Needwood Middle School is diverse, consisting of 45% Black or African American, 37% White, 10% Hispanic, 5% Multiracial, 3% Asian, and less than 1% Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.

These statistics are not representative of the district or the state, with higher representations of minority groups present in the school.”[DrJ14]. Summer school session was attended by 50 eight graders whose scores were not satisfactory on the math and/or reading/language arts end of the year assessments.

Summer school session was attended by 50 eight graders whose scores were not satisfactory on the math and/or reading/language arts end of the year assessments.

The students were divided bases on subject needed for remediation and learning deficiencies. Instructional rotations were established; 1.5 hours dedicated subject needed or the entire daily remediation if only one subject was needed. Summer school sessions were scheduled for 3 weeksof instruction with one week for assessment.

The observed reading teacher hosted up to 20 students with varying learning disabilities: autism, specific learning disorder, other health impairments, and attention deficit/hyperactive disorder
