1. SI Sources and Uses of Funds Explain in general terms how savings institutions differ from commercial banks with respect to their sources of funds and uses of funds. Discuss each source of funds for SIs.

Identify and discuss the main uses of funds for SIs.

Savings institutions gain a big portion of their funds from savings deposits, more than large commercial banks.

Whereas savings institutions may offer accounts in the moment, they are unable offer traditional demand deposit. Savings institutions give attention to mortgages as their leading sourceof funds. T

his varies from commercial banks that concentrate on commercial loans and a few consumer loans. Commercial banks offer a small amount of mortgage loans when comparing it to savings institutions.

The principal practices of funds for savings institutions are: Cash to satisfy reserve requirements enforced by the Federal Reserve System and to accommodate withdrawal requests of depositors;

Mortgages where the presented real estate serves as collateral to safeguard against default risk; Mortgage-backed securities issued by other savings institutions that were in demandfor fundsInvestment securities like Treasury securities and corporate bonds that provide savings institutions with liquidity;

Consumer and commercial loans where consumer loans are normally for improving the home and education; the Garn-St Germain Act of 1982 permitted them to use up to 10 percent of their assets for commercial loans; Other services include providing provisional financing to other institutions through repurchase agreements, and the federal funds market.

The major sources of funds for savings institutions are: Deposits, that include passbook savings, retail CDs, and money market deposit accounts;

Borrowed funds, that come from either their district Federal Home Loan Bank for an extended length of time, the Federal Reserve discount window for very short-term loans, through repurchase agreements, and/or the federal funds market; Capital attained by issuing stock and retaining earnings
