1.Provide a technical description of 4B/5B Digital Encoding Scheme. Contrast it with the Manchester scheme. Explain how and why it provides better data rates.
Manchester encoding can tie up approximately twice the bandwidth of the original signal. In this encoding scheme, there is a transmission after every bit. This means there must be clocks with double the speed to send the same amount of data as the other schemes.
With the creation of 100 Mbps transmissions this limited bandwidth required a new type of encoding. The new encoding format is 4B/5B MLT code. 4B/5B encoding is a type of “Block coding”. In this method, blocks of data are processed instead of creating a signal for each individual bit [Fai06]. In 4B/5B encoding, there are 32 5-Bit codes, but 16 are used.
Of the remaining 16 codes, 7 are invalid and others are used to send control information 4 bits of data are turned into a unique 5-bit sequence and then encoded to be transmitted. In the 5-bit code, there must be one leading zero and no more than two trailing zeros.
This ensures there is never more than three consecutivezeros. This allows the baud rate to be equal to the bps, and is more efficient. This is a significant improvement over the other schemes [Sannd].
2.Create a ranked table based on transmission speed, comparing 3 types of twisted pair, coaxial cable, fiber-optic cable, microwave, and satellite. Include distances and typical installation use cases.
