Week 2: Assignment – Individual Personal Development Plan and Reflection
As I reflect on the questions at hand, I realize that I have come a long way in a rather short amount of time. I have always had the goal of being in the current position I am now ever since beginning to work in the contract world.
Seven years ago I ventured into the corporate world after working for years with school districts and non-profits. I began as a technical specialist considered an expert in my field of early childhood education. I quickly realized the potential for growth in the corporate world and the expanse of opportunities.
I worked for two years as a technical specialist and at the end of the contract and shortly after the birth of my son returned to work at a non-profit as an executive director.
Three years later my firm called asking if I would be interested in returning on a new contract as a team manager/senior technical specialist. I was, and worked in that position for two years.
Last December my supervisor and mentor asked me if I was ready to take over – my response was “are you kidding, no!” After the shock wore off and contemplating the situation and the opportunity – I said yes. I thought “this contract is as much mine as hers and I don’t want anybody coming in from the outside and changing that”.
Four months ago I was promoted to Senior Project Manager, there are only 12 of these positions across the nation pertaining to this contract. I was a little scared, very excited, and extremely thankful for the opportunity. This position is challenging, but I see now that I was andam ready to take it on.
I am genuinely surprised when staff say to me “wow, you are really good at this” or “you stay so calm and told the client no, but they were so happy when we left the meeting”.
Their comments let me know I am on the right track and remind me to consider how I am perceived by others. I think I honestly was looking for more of a challenge and now I have it.
I don’t like to feel bored in what I am doing and this position builds on my previous experience as well as develops skills in new areas such as contract management – i.e. contract start-up, shut down, the logistics and political side of working with the client (government contracts), and ensuring company profit margins.
This leads me to “where do I want to go next”. I have tried to think about this and I don’thave any idea which direction I want to go at this point. I do know that I want to grow into this position and take the time to determine if the work makes me happy or not, to help define the future direction I take.
I am at the top tier of contract management so to move up would be higher up the management chain within the firm. Or I could branch out into other lines of work within contract management. One of the reasons I decided to pursue my MBA at this particular
