Week 4: Assignment – Leading Versus Managing Reflection
I believe that if you are a manager it does not necessarily mean you are a leader and if you are a leader it does not necessarily mean you are a manager. Also, I believe that there are a few very talented individuals who are not only great leaders but great managers as well.
One needs to not only understand the difference, but recognize the difference in themselves to focus their efforts to be able to walk in both shoes. I have been, in my opinion, a good manager, but am now in a role where I am really concentrating on becoming a great leader.
To me, managing focuses on implementation. Implementing the project plan, policies andprocedures, directs staff, looks at the details, and ensures goals and objectives are met.
In my last position I was a manager and had the responsibility of directing our GS team and ensuring we met contractual obligations and submitted deliverables on time. As I am know realizing through self-reflection in this class, I was good at being a manager, but not great as this isn’t where my heart lies.
I’m good at organizing the details, I can ensure we meet deadlines and objectives, and I can give staff direction. But this doesn’t make me happy in my work. To be honest it is just stressful. Steve Keating made a good point in his article, Leading vs Managing, that “people will not and cannot be managed”.
What I realize, now that I have been in my currentrole for about 5 months, is that I really enjoy nurturing new ideas, looking and planning ahead, and encouraging and empowering my staff. Leading makes me happy.As stated in one way or another in almost every article I researched, leading is “inspiring and motivating”.
As George Bradt stated in an article in Forbes, “leaders influence”. Leaders “enable others to contribute toward organizational success”, raise expectations, ask questions, and create the value in the work that we do. To me, leading is the compass that guides the coursewe are taking.
I am charting the course for my team, but my managers ensure that we stay on course. I am now recognizing that I have had leadership qualities that have emerged in other various roles and positions I have had, but now is my time to really develop my leadership qualities.
In developing my IDP plan I have incorporated action steps that specifically address areas of leadership development for me such as continuing to build relationships and being more socially aware, becoming skilled in the art of asking
questions and guiding staff rather than giving direction, and aligning my ethics and values with those of my company (and in turn influencing my staff to do the same).
These steps will enable me to be better at inspiring, motivating, empowering, and influencing my staff and this project. I am now realizing that as I become more “people focused”, I need to let go of being “work focused” and I also need to
