AbstractBig Data Analysis has come to play an essentially increasing role in the supply chain management sector. As technology continues to advance, so do all of an organization’s supply chain activities and stakeholders.
Although big data is a relatively new phenomenon, it has proven its worth in the supply chain sector by allowing organizations to reshape the way they approach their suppliers, delivery, distribution and even manufacturing.
By developing new efficiencies, organizations are become leaner, therefore developing and retain clients at a higher rate.Before we discover the value and limitations of big data, we must define it. According to a 2014 survey of 43 data scientists conducted by University of California, Berkley revealed “even the definition of Big Data is contentious.
Each respondent provided a different answer, debating whether the concept was a process, a tool or a result. (Lopez, 2017)” In other words, its application has been a multi-step journey – the new influx of data inevitably forces organizationsto develop new and innovative systems to process it and derive new and useful insights from it.
As this concept of “big data” continues to gain traction, many are hoping that it will immediatelyprovide new insights for the supply chain sectors.
This confusion of its applications requires supply chain managers to define big data basedon where the applications are applying it. The most cited definition of the term, provided by Gartner’s, give us some more visibility to big data’s meaning.
Gartner implies “Big Data is a high-volume, high-velocity and/or high-variety information assets that demand cost-effective, innovative forms of information process that enable enhanced insight, decision making, and process automation. (Lopez, 2017)”
As a concept, Big Data requires more data, processing systems, and analytics to function. The bottom line is that “Big Data is providing supplier networks with greater data accuracy, clarity, and insights, leading to more contextual intelligence shared across supple chains. (Columbus, 2015)”
In order for an organization to leverage this idea, they must innovate new andright processes and strategies that access this new data, analyze it, and then take actionable steps based on its findings.
Making Big Data Actionable
Big data analytics can quickly become a vital tool for making sense of a large volume of data. As these resources are undertaken by managers, customers, staff, and suppliers, the range and volume continue to increase with billions of data points generated by sources all linked directly to the supply chain.
These transactions and nodes give insight into areas that are more indirectly impacting the supply chain such as social media content, retail channels and even transportation. It is, however, increasingly important to harness this information to remain competitive in the market. Big Data is “increasingly enabling better decisions and actions and
