3. Is the development model that Boeing utilized for the 787 the “model of the future” for the development of jetliners? Why? Why Not?

In many cases, it would seem that the benefits of creating such an efficient jet would outweigh the negatives. As Boeing worked to produce the 787, they decided to take a desired competitive leap toward production and develop a 787 Dreamliner that would require the company to outsource a significant portion of the engineering to suppliers.

The 787 was supposed to be a big jump forward for the organization – notably, the first plane to be made completely of composite materials rather than aluminum. It would consumer 20% less fuel than the equivalent 767, which would help airlines’ diminishing profit margins, making this aircraft more than just desirable.

Right from the start, Bowing was well behind in giving final specifications for structure and systems. They were trying to “cram as much technology into the plan as possible without making it too heavy. (Miller, 2018)”

Unfortunately, the outsourcing strategy created turmoil for the future craft. In many ways, problems like these are always a feature of new plane launches. However, the extent to which the 787 has been troubled both in post-launch and gestationsuggesting that something more is creating concerns.

The organization undertook what could be considered one of the most “extensive outsourcing campaigns that it has ever attempted in its history. (Allsworth, 2018)”
