Effective leadership is the driving force of all business functions in an organization. Strong and assertive leaders help to maximize a workplaces productivity and helps employees achieve key organization goals and objectives.
Dedicated team effort and loyalty to team leadership is created by a leader who is fearless and carries a vision and the ability to influence their teammates to work towards thegoal of that vision.
Only those who are best equipped to acquire leadership positions and the hold on to those positions rise to the top in any area. Leadership is an art that takes steady persistence, patience, and most importantly, awareness. Vision helps drive awareness, while self-awareness drives effective leadership.
This vision, mixed with self-awareness is your biggest secret weapon to success in leadership. As mentioned in our reading, “Are Leaders Born or Made”, we notice again this persistent trend of self-awareness, motivation, and vision when considering a true recipe for great leadership execution.
We learn that “Becoming truly self-aware means to cultivate, daily, an accurate sense of how you show upin the world and what motivates you. (Andersen, 2012)” To do so, all leaders need to be assessed.
They need to realize what they excel in; what their weaknesses are – this, as we’ve seen before, is one of the foremost keys of a leader; self-awareness. All organizations need to consistently asses how well their leaders exercise those qualities over their subordinates.
Unfortunately, assessing this leadership effectiveness can often become a difficult exercise for many organizations, often times because of the threat of potential backlash from giving leaders constructive and negative feedback.
Although there is no perfect instrument for self-assessment, there are hundreds of current assessment instruments that leaders and organizations use wisely. I started with the HBR Leadership Assessment: “What’s Your Leadership Style?” to learn that my primary leadership style is a “Collaborator”.
One who is “humble and perceptive about others’ needs, and takes a team-first approach to leadership. In building teams..(I) support and develop colleagues by placing them in positions where they can excel, and share credit for team success with all members. (West, Stixrud & Reger, 2015)
As a result, I should be good at attracting talent and helping encourage team collaboration. I am also perceived as supportive, empathetic, and caring. Yet, my strong “team-first” orientation may prevent me from developing my own convincing identity as a leader.
I’m to be the “unsung hero” who often misses out on opportunities or promotions that go instead to people what are better showcasing their successes. I’m likely to thrive is people need someone who can help support their development and invest in their
