Profile of a Struggling Company
Current Management Planning Motorola’s management planning practices have historically interfered with the company’s ability to optimally function.
After being the first company to invent the cellular network in the 80s, Motorola took a back seat to innovation ever since (Anderson). With no clearcompany vision, management had no direction, employees felt lost, and the pace of innovation slowed down significantly (Anderson).
The lack of urgency set them back significantly, and they have been trying to catch up to fast-paced Silicon Valley and Asian tech companies like Samsungand Apple ever since.
With the lack of growth in the past, Motorola’s plan has been to make deals with other companies, like Apple, in hopes of regaining some momentum in the tech market (Fishman).
This strategy was focused on allowing the company to catch up, but in turn it only helped a competitor get stronger (Fishman). For the company who invented the cellphone market, it’s ironic that Motorola became very disconnected from the 3G and smartphone world.
It became apparent that they had too many products to effectively advertise, many of them lacking the latest features that the companyhad patents for like touchscreens and QWERTY keypads (Fishman).
Also, over the years, the company had been creating and producing many variations of different products for different carriers like AT&T and Verizon (Fishman).
Left with all of these outdated products that came in all kinds of variations, Motorola was also left with a name with no brand and no future. Since then, the company has been split into two parts, Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility, each with a clearer vision going forward (Fishman).
Employees’ Perception and Organizational Culture
At Motorola, employee perception has definitely been impacted by management’s performance in the past.
Over the years, the company has experienced many different CEOs and lots of shareholders, creating an an environment where no one is sure who is loyal to whom. At
