Like the innovative services and products, successfully managing the 40,000-plus employees (“The people behind Google”, 2016) now with Google requires a creative touch.
Google planned to make its fame and riches by encouraging its employees to innovate. Side projects are common and welcomed, and the best ideas have a chance to receive funding to become something successful for the company (Anthony, 2009).
The management structure Google organized to facilitate its employees to do what was desired of them—innovate—is one of consistence and team dynamics (Worstall, 2013).
By demonstrating consistency amongst the management teams, the other employees gain a sense of freedom because they learn what is expected, and what is acceptable and what is not (Worstall, 2013). Another way that Google leads its employees is by making senior management available to even the lowest employees for questions and insight.
According to Joshua Cook (2012), Google offers amenities such as dining facilities, gyms, laundry services, barbers, car washes, dry cleaning, and commuting services to employees so programmers can focus on doing what they do best: programming.
Google controlsthe flow of innovation by creating small teams of individuals with committees that oversee the smaller teams. Joshua Cook (2012) says it best: “Google, Inc. views small teams as individual start-ups. Google consists of many start-ups within a start-up.”
The small groups are able to share ideas across the company without having to worry about boundaries. Google controls turnover by allowing employees to switch groups without having to get approval from HR or some other channel whenever they want to (Cook, 2012).
