For final project two, I have decided to investigate Toyota. The company is struggling with recovering its image after several failed mechanical issues, and subsequent public relations failures.
Toyota had an initial recall of floor mats in 2009, however, the company went on that same year to recall 3.4 million more vehicles in three separate recalls, for a total of 7 million.

Profile of a Struggling Company: Toyota Lydia Hodgson Southern New Hampshire University

For final project two, I have decided to investigate Toyota. The company is struggling with recovering its image after several failed mechanical issues, and subsequent public relations failures.
Toyota had an initial recall of floor mats in 2009, however, the company went on that same year to recall 3.4 million more vehicles in three separate recalls, for a total of 7 million.
There were several issues: potentially sticky gas pedals, pedal entrapment and software glitches that affected braking on some models. (Cole, 2011)Toyota’s current management planning practices prohibit the organization’s ability to optimally function.
In an effort to expand and gain control of the market quickly, Toyota broke its common practice and shifted its US operations over several states. Previously, Toyota would concentrate its efforts on a certain location for quality control.
Specific barriers to communication within Toyota are executives being in Japan and unable to react quickly to problems as they arise.
A major player in keeping operations running was James E. Press, however, he left his top-ranking U.S. executive position in 2007, and Toyota replaced him with Japanese executives who could not respond quickly to problems in the US plants.
Another issue was overconfidence from Japanese executives employ tactics that keep them a “secretive and noncommunicative organization,” (Holstein, 2010).
“Toyota executives had a number of warnings about its deteriorating quality,” (Cole, 2011), and didn’t find those warnings notable.Japanese CEO, Akio Toyoda, took charge when some say he was not ready to lead. He employed a management strategy of “management by walking around,” (Holstein, 2010).
