Profile of a Struggling Company-Motorola

1) Current Management Planning:Assess how the current management planning practices interfere with or prohibit the organization’s ability to optimally function.

You should consider the P-O-L-C framework in your explanation.Motorola was a leader in the cellular industry by inventing the cellular network back in the 80’s.

Unfortunately, that was the peak of their performance. Managements planning practices have consistently interfered with the company’s ability to function at the optimal level.

With no clear company vision, management had no direction, employees felt lost, and the pace ofinnovation slowed down significantly (Anderson.2008).

The company’s lack of planning and communication is what has had them paying catch up. They tried to make deals with larger companies like Apple with hope of regaining some of the tech markets momentum.

Instead of helping Motorola, it only helped the competition get stronger by taking Motorola’s knowledge and making it into a sexier product.

The turnover in Motorola’s management seemed like a revolving door. When a Member of the founding Galvin family was in the CEO position the company seemed to have a focus. Motorola may not have made the right moves to build its own name but it did help make other companies better.

Its semiconductor division supplied chips to the communications division and,later, to outside companies such as Apple. (Fishman.2015). They also developed a system for total quality management called Six Sigma. (A Six Sigma process is one in which 99.99966 percent of products are free from manufacturing defects.)

A good chunk of the Fortune 500, including General Electric, IBM, and Boeing, wound up adopting it. (Fishman.2015). The current CEO, Greg Brown’s focus of the company these days is developing Software.

Specifically, advanced software that could dramatically improve how safety officers do their jobs. Imagine a jacket-mounted camera that turns on whenever a cop pulls a gun from his or her holster, beaming the images back to police headquarters.

Or Google Glass–like spectacles that give officers data—maps, feeds from nearby security cameras—in real time. Or sensors that can automatically detect gunfire in a neighborhood and dispatch patrols before anyone calls 911. (Fishman.2015).
