Introduction

General Motors is a well know multination automobile manufacture with 180,000 employees , serving five continents, speaking over 70 languages. The Global Headquarters are in Detroit, Michigan. General Motors manufacture anything from electric cars to heavy duty full size trucks, providing a complete range of vehicles.

There are eight automotive brands under GM’s corporate umbrella including Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac Holden, Baojun, Wuling, and Jiefang.

On February 6 , 2014 General Motors and to initial a massive recall on about 800,000 of its small cars due to defective ignition switches.

This could have caused the engine to shut off during driving and preventing airbags from deploying. The article The GM culture crisis:what leaders must learn from this culture case study explains GM to be a dysfunctional organization with a culture crisis.

The key attributes in this case study of General Motors were the lack of responsibility and communication by the employees as well as poor leadership with a lack of urgency. CEO Mary Barra initiated many changes to resolve the issue after the ignition crisis.

She willingly acknowledged the wrong and expressed her readiness to rectify the issues, this was the key strength for GM. There are many strengths and weaknesses in the organization, but the key weakness is the organization is GM’s culture and leadership. This crisis would have been an
