2. The article’s purpose, according to (Hunsley, Elliot, & Therrien) is to review the results of prior studies on psychological treatments, which deal with several common mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). (2014)
3. The authors, Hunsley, Elliot, and Therrien, claim that specific forms of psychological treatment may significantly help those who have, or are suffering, from a mental illness. (2014)
4. The variables being researched within this article are the treatments for various mental disorders, that include: depression, social anxiety, bipolar disorder, specific phobia, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). (Hunsley, Elliot, & Therrien, 2014)
5. The variables mentioned in this article have been previously studied and researched in the past. However, with regards to all these previous studies, it was concluded that the treatment benefited the clients, but it “only focused on the efficacy of treatment for mental illnesses, and not necessarily on the effectiveness of treatment.” (Hunsley, Elliot, & Therrien, 2014)
6. The research design relied on examination of data from several independent studies of the same subject, which is another way of saying meta-analysis, to determine overall trends. This involved gathering of information from each of these efficacy studies, that drew well over a thousand participants. It was also based and assisted by hundreds of studies that were researched by the authors.
7. I didn’t observe any concerns with regards to ethics, as it pertained to this study. All the participant’s confidential information was kept protected by the authors.
Limitations of the research was listed, along with credible sources being referenced. And, most importantly, the authors gained approval for their research prior to commencing their work. (Ethical Principals of Psychologists and Code of Conduct, 2019)
The conclusion reached by the authors was that evidence indicated psychological interventions substantially improved functioning for those individuals that were dealing with anxiety, mood, and other related mental illnesses. (Hunsley, Elliot, & Therrien, 2014)
