Is Friday the 13th an Unlucky Day to Drive? Zimmermann Southern New Hampshire University

For this researcher’s final project, she has selected to use scenario five which looks at Friday the 13th as an unlucky day, or whether it is just superstition.
The scenario was adapted bythe study conducted by Scanlon, T. J., Luben, R. N., Scanlon, F. L., & Singleton, N. (1993) titled “Is Friday the 13th Bad for Your Health?” Scenario five was selected because Social Psychologyis this researcher’s chosen concentration.
This researcher elected this concentration because she has always been interested in learning why people do what they do, especially when they are in social situations and could possibly be influenced by others, or by social norms.
The involved parties in the data set include drivers who were in reported traffic accidents on Friday the 6thand Friday the 13th. Data for this study will be provided by the Department of Transport in the South West Thames region of the United Kingdom.
The date range of the data is between July 1990 and November 1992 on a specific section of M25 (between junctions seven and eight) with one day omitted because the date was also a holiday. Drivers could have been involved in an accident on one of those days or both. By looking at the data, a researcher could answer the question, which day has more reported traffic accidents.
The study conducted by the authors agrees with The American Psychological Association’s (APA) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct by following many of principles and sections. One principle that is followed is General Principle C: Integrity.
This principle states that “Psychologists seek to promote accuracy, honesty, and truthfulness in the science, teaching, and practice of psychology” (“Ethical Principles of Psychologists,” n.d.). The study provides details of what types of data were omitted from the information studied, and the why’s behind the omission.
This helps the reader understand that the authors wanted to make this study’s information as accurate as possible. General Principle E of the Ethical Principles of Psychologists is also followed in the study.
Principle E: Respect for People’s Rights and Dignity, states “Psychologists respect the dignity and worth of all people, and the rights of individuals to privacy, confidentiality, and self-determination” (“Ethical Principles of Psychologists,” n.d.).
The authors of the study do not discuss individual information in any part of their research, which is especially important when itcomes to learning about why someone was admitted into a hospital.
By not mentioning a person’s age, gender, race or ethnicity allowed the authors to further comply with Principle E.
