Problem Statement
Music can be used in various ways, including therapy, changing the present mood and psychological state, and triggering physiological change. There are several different genres of music to choose from and every person has a favorite that they prefer over the other.
Musical preferences are often chosen by the current mood of the individual or what they are doing at the time (i.e. homework, exercising, cleaning, etc.). For example, if an individual undergoes a break-up, they will typically turn to an emotional song that they can relate to; which provides them a sense of solace (Koelsch & Taruffi, 2014).
There are numerous research studies exploring the effects of music on a person’s mood and mental/emotional state (Joshi, 2013). According to TEL-NET (2017), researchers have investigated the alpha and beta brainwave patterns in two different states of the mind (a.k.a. attention and meditation).
Music can stimulate more areas of the brain compared to every other human function. Music is capable of not only changes in mental well-being but can be used as a therapy with patients who struggle with speech and memory (Mannes, 2011).
Music is powerful and can affectpeople in numerous ways and this research aims to gain a better understanding on music’s effectson a person’s mood. Investigating music’s effects on the mind and body can provide insight into therapeutic ways to help people with mental disorders.
This research could be the breakthrough that society needs to transition from less pharmaceutical drugs to more homeopathic healing.
Existing Research
An experimental study conducted by Field, Martinez, and Nawrocki (1998), investigated the effects of music on adolescents that had been diagnosed with chronic depression, specifically music’s effects on the right frontal EEG activation and cortisol levels.
It was hypothesized that mood would improve alongside shifts in the frontal EEG from right to left, as well as decreases in salivary cortisol levels (Field, Martinez, & Nawrocki, 1998).
Results of this study indicated that the participants in the music group had a decrease in cortisol levels from pre-session to post session.
There was also movement in the frontal EEG activation showing that of the 14 adolescents in the music group, 10 had a shift to the left, 3 shifted more to the right, and 1 had noidentified shift. While the control group did not have any changes associated.
The researchers evaluated the 3 adolescents again in a second session, however, this time they listened to classical music; resulting in shifts toward normalcy.
Results concluded that music positively effects the physiological and biochemical measures, regardless of the lack of self-reported mood change (Field, Martinez, & Nawrocki, 1998). A study conducted by Grahn and Nguyen (2017)
