With almost all college students having smartphones with social media apps at their fingertips, just how many times a day are these students clicking on these apps out of boredom or are frustrated with schoolwork? Introduction
The topic that I have chosen is about the amount of social media usage among college graduate students and their academic performance.
With almost all college students having smartphones with social media apps at their fingertips, just how many times a day are these students clicking on these apps out of boredom or are frustrated with schoolwork? Are the students spending more time on social media sites rather than studying and working on their coursework?
Do their grades suffer because of social media usage? All these questions result in my main research question that is “Does social media site usage among college graduate students effect their academic performance?” I would use questionnaires along with honest weekly updates with the participants about their social media usage for that week along with the grades they received for that week as well.
This would continue for one semester/term to conclude if social media affects participants academic performance as a graduate student.
Problem Statement
In today’s world full of technology at our fingertips, just how much time is spent on the social media platform Facebook, and how do college student’s academic performance correlate with the amount of time they spend on Facebook? Researchers are out to understand why people behave the way they do with different variables at hand. Researchers also investigate finding out if there are any similarities within certain age groups or races.
Are college students getting aggravated at their workload that they just stop and scroll through Facebook as a distraction. Are there students who don’t even use Facebook at all? The articles that I have researched all have excellent information to support college levels (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, graduate student) and their use of Facebook with what their GPA is for a term or semester in college.
Literature Review
In an article by Frein, S. T., Jones, S. L., & Gerow, J. E., (2013) a study was done to show that using Facebook at what is considered high usage resulted in lower grades for college students.
The hypothesis was that the more a person used Facebook the less words that they would remember in the word memory test. This study took 44 college students who were split into two groups of high Facebook users and low Facebook users to partake in a word memory test.
Duringthe study the participants were not allowed to have any electronics with them. After the study theparticipants did fill out paperwork about themselves including gender, age, race, etc. This study concluded that the low Facebook users (those who never use Facebook or only use it for less than one hour per day) remembered a substantial number of words more than the high Facebook users.
Advantages of this study is that it shows the memory skills of Facebooks users based on the amount of time they spend on Facebook. This helps researchers to see if being on Facebook
