Chapter one addressed the numerous ways to avoid breaching ethics. It also mentioned specific groups of people to avoid as a precaution. While reading this extensive list I was thinking to myself, if you rule out all of these groups of people there will be no one left to treat! The chapter then goes into how being overly obsessive and using fear-based risk management can be damaging to clients as well as mental health professionals’ careers (Koocher & Keith-Spiegel, 2016).While it is beneficial to be cautious, there is no need to be overdramatic and take such drastic measures, considering it is practically impossible to always avoid situations with the possibility of an ethical breach.

Ethical mindfulness posturing is something that you are actively engaging in when with apatient. Self-awareness is extremely important when working in the mental health profession because actions, words, and posturing can be misconstrued or turned around in the future. There are many reasons for lapses in self -awareness such as overpraising our positive qualities, overestimating our level of competence, insufficient cognitive strategies, and a self-serving bias (Koocher & Keith-Spiegel, 2016). Mental health professionals must take into consideration how things could be misinterpreted in order to avoid ethical misconduct.
