Alfred Adler had an interesting theory about birth order. Consider your birth order and the birth order of friends. Do Adler’s ideas appear to apply? Why? Why not? Based on your understanding of Adler’sconcepts of the inferiority and superiority complexes, which do you identify in yourself? How did you come to choose that or those? In responding to your peers, comment on how (or not) Adler’s ideas can be generally applied. Adler’s ideas about birth order relate to my family’s to some degree. Adler’s theory about birth order relates to “the idea that order of birth is a major social influence in childhood, one from which we create our style of life” (Schultz & Schultz, 2013, p. 121). This unique type of life describes how a person strives to reach a goal through his or her characteristics. My family structure is quite unique. I was born second out of six siblings; however, my older sibling had a mental disability so his mental age was younger than mine. According to my mental understanding, I was raised as the oldest.

This unique type of life describes how a person strives to reach a goal through his or her characteristics. My family structure is quite unique. I was born second out of six siblings; however, my older sibling had a mental disability so his mental age was younger than mine. According to my mental understanding, I was raised as the oldest. Though my older brother was chronological four years older than me, I still ended up being the one with the most responsibilities and had to serve as a role model for the younger children. I was often “dethroned”(Schultz & Schultz, 2013, p. 122) by all of my other sibling’s needs. This dethroning did lead to arguments between my parents and myself about bonding activities, responsibilities, understanding, and fairness.

Iwas grounded a lot growing up. Adler’s concept identifies that the firstborn area is usually organized and detailed-oriented. That describes me perfectly. I constantly have to make time charts, declutter and arrange things in some type of order. I am also very detailed when it comes to cooking, household projects, and work assignments. In relevance to Adler’s concepts, my youngest sibling also relates well to his theory. Being able to receive more attention from everyone caused her to become “excessively pampered” (Schultz & Schultz, 2013, p. 124). Since she knows that others will help her She does not strive as hard as the rest of the siblings when it comes to education or athletics. She constantly gives up earlier and expects others to fix her problems overall, Adler’s ideas about birth order appear to apply to my family.
