Journalism and the News in Real-Time

News stories come from more than the traditional journalist. Traditional U.S. journalists fear that mobile journalism may be threatening the integrity of reporting.

The mobile reporter is an evolving practice of new media storytelling where citizens use smartphones via the internet togather and distribute news from their community. Mobile reporting or mobile journalists are starting to have relevance in the U.S. Traditional journalist are degrading mobile reporters and their stories as uncreditable. This form of journalism is throughout the world without green eyes from foreign reporters.

Mobile reporters are getting news others cannot.Social media’s methods of instantaneous communication have brought new expectations to the field of journalism. News received today must be live to be new breaking news. A culture of instant gratification has shown us that there is no need to wait for these reports.

Journalists must be capable of writing, shooting, and managing media accounts. Traditional reporting is more limited in its scope as it relies on the few stories rather than the many. Traditional journalists create discretely and polished products for the mass media, while mobile journalists tend to disseminate parts of the story without any background or filter.

This new form of storytelling caters directly to the need to get real-time information. Traditional journalists fully develop a story taking more time and care before releasing it. Storiesbecome useless if tainted by social media first. In many countries, citizen reporting is the only way news is released or leaked to the rest of the world.

Governments take extraordinary measures to stop this information from being broadcast. Some casting punishment was as severe as death. These conditions are making it extremely dangerous for any journalist but especially mobile journalists from other countries.

Governmental interference is a valid threat. Last year a citizen reporter in Hong-Kong, during pro-democracy demonstrations, the Chinese government intimidated bloggers by threatening them with a 3-year sentence. (Dangerfield, D.,2019)

The amateur video of Ian Tomlinson’s death in London, the accurate account of what happened, was released to the public, contradicting the Metropolitan police claims of natural death. (Dangerfield, D.,2019}North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Iran, China, and Cuba are all in the top ten most muzzled countries.

There are severe consequences for journalists and often their families. Vietnam, Iran
