An advanced practice nurse operating within the state of Florida carries a broad scope of practice, but not without limitation. At times the APN guidelines are ambiguous; other times, a clear boundary is set within the legislature. Qualification to become an advanced practice nurse exists beyond just an educational requirement. Multiple factors determine the scope of practice of the practitioner within the state of Florida. Universities that are known to be accredited by authorities in advanced practice nursing ensure the practitioner receives essential education core competencies and leadership education. These programs must not only provide the knowledge to provide direct patient care but also display leadership in emotional intelligence, integrity, and effective communication.APN Scope of PracticeThe Florida State Legislature does not currently allow for the advanced practice nurse to practice independently.

Legislature provides a general scope of practice guidelines with the requirement that a physician is responsible for and provides guidance to the nurse practitioner.[ CITATION Flo19 \l 1033 ] Although a practitioner could work in practice with multiple physician mentors, a specific physician must be responsible for him or her. This mentor-physician and practitioner will maintain an agreed-upon contract. This contract is to include expectations of the nurse practitioner’s role as well as a more specific scope of practice and privileges. [ CITATION Flo16 \l 1033 ] In a hospital setting, the advanced practice nurse may be subject to additional restrictions as specified by the facility.

While the APN has an agreement of scope with a physician, the hospital may grant specific care privileges to the practitioner just as they would a physician. [ CITATION Cor18 \l 1033 ] This privilege list may be more specific, listing direct allowances such as central line placement or airway intubation. In 2017, Florida nurse practitioners were granted limited authority to prescribe controlled substances.[ CITATION The19 \l 1033 ] Controlled substances maintain a restriction that limits the length of a prescription as well as additional continuing education requirements required before prescribing.
