Review of the Literature on Communication Strategies in NursingThe following review of literature review addresses three major themes role-playing strategies, patient simulation, and palliative care and end-of-life communication. Each theme maintains its relevance based on how the findings help researchers identify the benefits and limitations of training programs designed to help nursing students improve communication skills. Moreover, each theme illustrates the need to increase standardizing in nursing education to help nursing students increase self-efficacy and improve competency levels. Role-Playing StrategiesFive studies specifically described the benefits of role-playing to improve communication skills among nursing students. Interestingly, the study by Alabsi (2016) included findings that accounted for how Saudi students learning English as a foreign language (EFL) used role-playing to increase comprehension skills and improve communication, whereas Alfes (2015)noted how the practice applies to improve mental health behaviors.

Considering how vocabulary development is a key element in learning, the implications of language learning for nursing practice are unique insomuch as the psychological well-being of patients depends on how effectively nursing students communicate (Alfes, 2015; Rønning & Bjørkly, 2019). Through role-playing, nursing students overcome limitations by adopting pedagogical strategies to improve attitudes and cultivate higher self-efficacy levels. Similarly, the study by Dorri et al. (2019) involved researchers adopting the Kirkpatrick model to demonstrate how role-playing improves learning outcomes among nursing students. Developed in the 1960s, the Kirkpatrick model includes four levels of reaction, learning, behavioral change, and organizational performance that nursing educators must consider when evaluating progress toward achieving learning outcomes not limited to improving communication skills (Dorri et al., 2019; Smith et al., 2018).

When applying each level of interaction to the learning process, nursing educators may adopt new pedagogical principles to help students improve communication skills by participating in role-playing scenarios. However, Powers et al. (2019) described how nursing students should receive an education in patient-centered care (PCC) to improve communication skills and build competency skills while participating in role-playing scenarios, while the study by Rønning and Bjørkly (2019) provided empirical evidence of how role-playing encourages nursing students to develop therapeutic skills and reflect on clinical practice. Altogether, all five studies included here point to the significance of role-playing in improving how nursing students communicate.
