Unfortunately, once your computer is hardened and suitable for online use, the battle does not stop there. There are still mitigation steps and practices that are required in order to safeguard users against potential risks.
In this paper, the discussion of mitigation tools and best practices to secure a computer for home use; while providing guidance for family members using social networking sites. Often laptop manufacturers are paid to install software from third parties; making it imperative as a user to uninstall any unwanted software.[Too16]
This ‘pre-installed software’ may include anything from free trials of anti-malware applications, to web browser toolbars that serve no useful purpose and may often out your computer at risk.
While wasted hard disk space is seldom a problem on most new laptops, pre-installed software can potentially slow a computerdown and cause conflicts with other more desirable applications. To avoid any future complications, it would be necessary to get rid of anything you do not recognize or want.
In order for your newly acquired Windows PC to remain secure, the next thing you should do is check for updates. Windows Update is one of the most important steps a user should implement. The Windows Update, (or Microsoft Update) utility is used to keep your Windows-based computer up-to-date with the latest patches.
Computers connected online must be up-to-date on critical patches. Whether manual or automatic, these updates typically will close security holes in your computer and hopefully prevent you from being hacked or infected with viruses. [Too16]
