In 1908 Israel Zangwill’s play “The Melting Pot” debuted in New York, with an impressive run of 136 performances. This play is the pillar for sociologists to describe the UnitedStates identity infrastructure.
One of the most used quotes within the play is “America is God’s crucible, the great melting pot where all races of Europe are melting and reforming” (Zangwill, 2007).
Such was national’s identity with this quote that even President Roosevelt leaned over the edge of his box and shouted, “That’s a great play, Mr. Zangwill, that’s a great play” (Schelesinger Jr, 1998).
How can we, however, lump immigration down to one quote? Furthermore, can we still consider ourselves as a melting pot nation?

How can we, however, lump immigration down to one quote? Furthermore, can we still consider ourselves as a melting pot nation?
Through this essay several factors such as the meaning of melting pot, changes in immigration reform through time, improving technology and communication, relocation to the suburbs and finally America’s animosity towards illegal immigration will show how the United States fits into the category of an ethnic stew.
To set up a framework, the term “immigrant” will refer to legal migrants in this country. “Melting pot” refers to people coming into this country and quickly assimilating to the way of life and becoming homogenous to the citizens around them;
shedding their heritage, language, ideology and old law mentality; adapting to this culture with no remnants of their original lives.
Another theory is the “salad bowl” theory that in contrast to the melting pot idea refers to a heterogeneous society, where a person comes into this country and retains all of his previous cultural characteristics; thus, there are many different ingredients that form the country with no set “cultural identity.”
Ethnic stew is very similar to the salad bowl theory. However, there’s a small difference; in a well-crafted stew, the ingredients remain whole yet deliciously permeated with their surroundings.
Thus, a person maintains their personal identity; however, they also blend into the country’s culture and help it improve by releasing their individual flavor.
Professor Jukes Chametzky’s article Beyond the Melting Pot analyzes how “men may change their clothes,their politics, their wives, their religions, their philosophies, to a[n] … extent; they cannot changetheir grandfathers…
The selfhood that is inalienable in them, and… the happiness that they pursue has its form implied in ancestral endowment” (Chametzky, 1989, p.7).
For that reason, a migrant comes here as a whole person, with a set identity, based on their culture, religion and family that are indefeasible. The person can adapt to their new surroundings and “evolve” or
