Assignment 28: A Basic Structure for Paragraph Essays

We’ve already spent a lot of time thinking about the writing process, including how to find ideas to write about,organizing ideas, and so on.

In fact, you might want to review Lesson 1 or any of the other earlier assignmentsas seems appropriate. In any case, you can think of this assignment as a preview of coming attractions that willcommand your attention in EN130.

Specifically, you’ll be learning to write full-fledged, multi-paragraph essays.Our focus here will be on thes tructure of a five-paragraph essay.

Understanding that structure provides youwith a basic template or pattern, a sort of basic discipline, that you can use as you go on to write essays thatmay include substantially more than five paragraphs.

It isn’t intended to shackle you to a fixed and limited set ofrules aimed at squelching original ideas or muting your creativity.Ultimately, the effectiveness of an academic essay is based on the following.

How well you use a selected rhetorical mode (narration, description, cause-and-effect, process, and soon)

How effectively you organize your thoughts (as in adopting time order, order of importance, or spatialorder)

How well you adopt a writing style appropriate for your intended audience

How well you express and convey the purpose of your essayIn that context, mastering the five-paragraph structure is a bit like going through boot camp.

It will help youprepare for the actual challenges of writing first-rate essays.The Thesis StatementAthesis statementshould appear in the introductory paragraph of an essay. But, in fact, you’ll draft your thesisstatement before you actually write your essay.

In short, a thesis statement is something you develop eitherbefore or during the period when you’re outlining and developing an essay. You’ll use it to guide your thinkingas you actually write your essay.

Consider this analogy.In the movie business, a screenplay is presented to an agent or producer using what’s called a logline. Here’san example of a logline: “A young woman seeks answers to a long-hidden family secret.”

A thesis statement isanalogous to a logline. The idea is the same: Write out your thesis in a single sentence.

Guidelines for Writing a Thesis Statement

1.Establish what kind of essay you want to write. A descriptive essay will have one kind of thesisstatement.

A persuasive or argument essay will have another kind of thesis statement. “The sights andsounds of Mt. Rainier National Park are unique” might be a thesis statement for a descriptive essay.

Athesis statement for an argument essay might look like this: “Public schools’ funding based on property taxes results in good schools for rich neighborhoods and poor schools for poor neighborhoods.”

2.As in the sample thesis statements above, a thesis statement should be specific. It should clearlycover what you intend to write in your essay and indicate what you intend to support through evidenceand examples
