Lesson 6: Proofreading
Assignment 24: Proofreading
the final step in the writing process. If you want to write effective paragraphs, much less college-worthy essays, your proofreading skills must be honed to razor-edge sharpness.
Consider a (very rough) analogy from biology.
Your DNA is a code. It consists of 64 codons. (A codon is a specific sequence of three nucleotides, but we can skip over the technicalities here.) The codons conspire in different ways to create 20 amino acids, which make up the 20 “letters” of the DNA alphabet.

This “alphabet” can “spell” the recipe for the many thousands of proteins and enzymes (words and sentences) that are organized in all kinds of ways so that we can move, blink, think, reproduce, and write sparkling sentences.
But what happens if, for some reason, a piece of the DNA code is either missing or “misspelled”? It’s hard to tell. But mutations happen. And some of them are too awful to think about.
On the other hand, what about a misunderstood or hastily scribed diplomatic message between countries that don’t trust each other? World War I resulted in part from a flurry of mixed and/or misunderstood
are full of misspelled words, misplaced commas, and capitalized common nouns? Bottom line:
Review your paragraph for meaning and flow. Did you write what you intended to write? Did you write for your audience?
Did you provide transitional expressions to allow your sentences to flow together as a seamless whole from your topic sentence to your concluding sentence?
