INTERNET-BASED CBT TO TREAT DEPRESSION

Depression is a common and serious mental health illness that all populations suffer from. This paper will review the use of internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as an effective treatment tool to reduce depression symptoms when used in combination with treatment as usual. The use of computerized cognitive behavioral therapy has decreased the cost of treatment and made it affordable to those in lower socioeconomic environments. In addition, CBT has been proven to decrease depressive symptoms, and now individuals can receive therapy in the comforts of their homes. This is an intervention that can aid the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner’s(PMHNP) profession by instituting this within their treatment plan. There were many strengths noted, such as a decrease in symptoms; on the other hand, there were weaknesses noted throughout the studies as well. More research on internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) needs to be conducted to ensure long-lasting effects of decreased symptoms are continuously being met. Depression is a common, global concern affecting a broad population of all ages. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a psychotherapy that is provided to individuals to assist in changing their interpretations of negative thoughts and/or behaviors.
