UNIT 5 ASSIGNMENT
1. Understand Access Control Protocols:
The two basic forms of medium access control protocols are CSMA/CD, which is found on star-wired bus local area networks, and CSMA/CA, which is found on wireless local area networks. Discuss the differences and similarities of these two protocols. Why would two be needed? Discuss why CSMA/CD would not be a good choice for a wireless network.

Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) is used to prevent collisions from occurring on a wireless network. It is a protocol used in the 802.11 carrier transmission. When a packet is sent by a node with the use of CSMA/CA the channel is verified to be clear or that no other nodes are transmitting at the same time. If the channel is clear the packets is sent.
When the channel is not clear it needs to wait a random period of time before it rechecks. If it is clear at that time it is sent, if not it will wait another period of random time. This period of time is known as the backoff timer. Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) is used to determine if a collision occurs. This means that two devices were sent at the same time.
This in turn causes a collision to occur. Once this is detected the transmission is instantly terminated. The information that was sent last will then be retransmitted. The main difference between CSMA/CA and CSMA/CD is that CSMA/CA does not deal with any issues of recovery after a collision occurs.
The next difference is the time that CSMA/CA and CSMA/CD works. CSMA/CA occurs before a collision would occur. CSMA/CD on the other hand occurs after a collision happens. CSMA/CA is used to reduce the changes that a collision occurs, while CSMA/CD minimizes that time that it takes to recover from a collision.
The last difference between them is that CSMA/CA is used on wireless networks and CSMA/CD is used on wired networks. Both of CSMA/CA and CSMA/CD work on the Media Access Control (MAC) protocol.
They are both used to prevent data loss. The reason that CSMA/CD is not used on a wireless network is that there is no means of determine if a collision occurred or not by the transmitter.
