MEEN 260: Mechanical Measurements Laboratory Manual

PREFACE

This manual serves as the description of laboratory tasks in MEEN 260, Mechanical Measurements, which is normally taken at the early junior level by mechanical engineering students at Texas A&M University.

This material was initially developed in 2000-2001 by the first author and Justin McFatter, a teaching assistant assigned to this laboratory during that timeframe and has been extended in the subsequent years with much help from a number of people, including

Dr. Bryan Rasmussen who helped revise some of these and contributed Lab #3 on statistics and Lab #8 on sound measurement and Dr. Alan Palazzolo who prepared Lab #5 on electromagnetism.

In addition numerous laboratory assistants have helped revise the individual sections of this manual over the past decade. Mr. Joyner Faulk, formerly the technician supporting this course, also contributed to the refinement of this manual.

Instructions in a number of the labs have been updated based on personal experience of Joshua Bittle (Course Instructor) and Scott Jones (Lab Technician) from the Fall 2013 semester. This includes issues related to updated equipment and software as well as other methodology clarifications.

Additionally, the previous digital filtering lab has been simplified (no programming necessary) while also adding substantial additional material to give the students hand on experience testing various filtering techniques on a simulated signal in a custom VI that must be distributed.

The manual has been updated to correct errors identified by lead Teaching Assistants Jorge Mijares and Zongyao Jin during the fall 2016 term. In addition, portions of Lab #1 (LabVIEW Programming) that have been traditionally skipped for time reasons have been removed.
