The STATIC-99 is an assessment used to determine the risk of male sex offenders over the age of 18 recommitting a sexually violent act after release from prison (Harris, 2003). TheSTATIC-99 has a 10-item prediction scale used to evaluate risk factors associated with sexual recidivism and provide probability estimates of sexual re conviction (Harris, 2003). Particular strengths of the STATIC-99 are: empirically proven association between sexual recidivism and the risk factors, it is easy to score, it provides clear and concise estimates of the probability of recidivism, and it has been proven to be valid in an array of settings (Nunes, Firestone, Bradford,Green berg, & Broom, 2002). Particular weaknesses of the STATIC-99 are: the test has only moderate predictive accuracy, it is deceptively simple with a complex and occasionally confusing, set of coding guidelines, the base rate variation of the test can complicate interpretation, and the test neglects important dynamic factors such as familial ties outside of intimate partners or children (Nunes, Firestone, Bradford, Green berg, & Broom, 2002).

The STATIC-99 is a useful tool in helping to determine the risk factors involved in releasing adult, male sexual offenders who have been offense-free for between 2 and 10 years(Harris, 2003). The test may be also be useful in assessing juveniles aged 16 or 17 years, but any juvenile assessments should be done with caution. The tool should not be used to assess juvenile under the age of 16, and should only be used to assess female inmates for research purposes only(Harris, 2003). During psychotherapy, forensic psychotherapists use a variety of evaluation methods and devices. The sorts of evaluations given are dependent on the client’s unique requirements and are used to determine the best treatment choices for persons who have committed violent actions.Assessments are needed to learn about a client’s mental and emotional health, sexual assault history, addiction problems, criminal background, and other mental health illnesses or related factors.

It’s common practice to perform many assessments to obtain accurate and reliable information for clients’ treatment needs. When doing these assessments, the forensic psychotherapist must adhere to the Federal Rules of Evidence and the Daubert Standard. The Federal Rules of Evidence are rules that govern the admission of evidence in civil and criminal cases in federal trial courts across the country (Daniel & Daniel, 2012). The Daubert Standard is a rule of evidence that governs expert witness testimony admission (Daubert V. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals 1993). Following these norms and standards (which are part of federal legislation) guarantees that evaluations are done using suitable criteria that are scientifically sound and widely acknowledged among scientists(“Forensic Evidence Admissibility & Expert Witnesses: Daubert Standard,” 2021).
