Wes is a 17-year-old male adolescent that has been diagnosed with Autism. He was born to a mother and father that were not known to abuse drugs or alcohol. His father left when he was 2 years old, leaving his mother to raise 2 boys on her own. He took all her money as well. This made his home life very unpredictable. Wes was always different than the other kids. He was anti-social, had bad anxiety, and it upset him when his routine was disrupted. His mother remarried when he was 6 and had another boy with her new husband. This husband was very aggressive and prone to violence. He would beat the two boys that were not his, Wes and his brother. Wes was diagnosed at 13 with Asperger’s Syndrome. Later on, that was lumped into the umbrella diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or High Functioning Autism spectrum disorder (HFASD). Wes has started to dabble in Marijuana use and has found that it makes things a lot easier for him. HE feels more normal when he smokes marijuana.

Describe the development of the frontal lobes. Review the executive functioning skills and tie them to frontal lobe development. How might the development of the frontal lobes explain poor judgment, erratic behaviors, and impulsive actions seen in adolescents? Development of frontal lobes lot of research has focused on the relatively late maturation of the frontal lobes. The frontal lobes are among the last areas of the brain to develop. Some people, do not fully develop until their late twenties. During childhood and adolescence, the cortical areas of the brain continue to thicken. This happens as neural connections multiply. The volume of gray matter in the frontal cortex peak at about 11 or 12 years of age. Because of this, sections of the brain that are not used are trimmed. While this trimming is going on, there is a loss of gray matter. This loss of gray matter moves from the back to the front of the brain. The frontal lobes are the last to show this (Johnson et al., 2009).

Discuss the difference between expressive and receptive language systems, focusing on neuroanatomical substrates. What types of language impairments would be seen with damage to the different brain areas? How is acquired damage to those areas functionally different from developmental language delays? When responding to your peers, think about the ways humans rely on language and address additional ways language disruption can affect daily functioning. Expressive language is the ability one has concerning the use of vocabulary to express themselves while communicating (Birkett & Carlson, 2017). Receptive language is the ability one has to understand information based on the understanding of expressive language (Birkett &Carlson, 2017). These are critical systems that contain the importance and knowledge of the areas of the brain where grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension take place.
