A Good TestPrimarily a good test is one that measures what it claims or intends to measure (Cohen & Swerdlik, 2018). It should provide results that can be acted upon in a way that is beneficial to individuals or society. A good test is one that has psychometric soundness in the form of reliability and validity (Cohen & Swerdlik, 2018). Reliability and ValidityReliability refer to the consistency of measures and the degree of error in those measures. A high amount of error means the tool is unreliable and of course, should be avoided. To be reliable, the same results should be attained each time a tool measures the same variable under the same conditions (Cohen & Swerdlik, 2018). This can be established through test-retest reliability, inter-rater reliability, or internal consistency. A test is valid if it measures what it claims to measure. The test items individually and collectively should adequately measure the construct, content, or criterion of interest. The interpretation of the test scores should also be examined to ensure that they are correctly measuring the construct. The scores on one test measuring a construct should be compared to another instrument measuring the same or opposite.

According to Cohen and Swerdlik (2018), test construction entails writing test items, formatting items, setting scoring rules, and generally just designing the test. This is important because having a good foundation for the assessment can allow for a higher quality product. Tests can be conducted in just about any setting: education, work, on cars, computers, persons, service industry, etc. Psychological testing is different in that it allows for diagnosing individuals and creating treatment plans for mental illnesses. According to Cohen and Swerdlik (2018), a good test is reliable and valid, and a good test item is also reliable and valid. This means that a person would be able to take the same test and receive the same result. Also, this means that the questions are clear, simple, and unbiased.
