Part 2: Apply Self-AssessmentsCoping StrengthsI scored fairly high on strategic planning and Emotional support. This means I already make lists and plan everything ahead of time. It will help me strategize how I am going to fit my workouts into my already busy schedule, and in the middle of a cross-country move. As far as emotional support, I need to make sure that I am in the right mindset as I go through this process. I scored lowest in preventative coping, although I scored high in strategic planning. When it comes to planning and making lists I’m super detailed, but I never stop to take into consideration the “what if”. I need to learn all my resources so that I can avoid any obstacles that may come up. Connections to Emotional IntelligenceThe profession of a school counselor is important. Others are taking counsel from you because you cannot show certain feelings, sentiments, or behavior that might hinder a student’s reasoning. Dealing with students is demanding work. You cannot let the feelings get to you. You should adjust to your student’s feelings and make their well-being a key concern. It is important to be compassionate to the student’s emotions.

Teenagers are very moody and sentimental. You must be empathetic as well. The opinions and feelings of students can always be considered. Be an active listener so that you can interpret their feelings well. There are often confrontations and conflicts between students, and you need to find a reasonable compromise between them. Connections to Emotional IntelligenceBeing a Victim Advocate, I must be mindful of my emotions, behavior, and thoughts. It will not take a lot to let your emotions take over at times. I will need to learn how to always control my emotions. If I cannot handle the way I feel, it can affect the way that I communicate with people, affect my decision making and have a negative outcome on the services that I am trying to provide. “EI may also improve performance of specific job tasks such as decision making and negotiation (Elfenbein, 2007). Both require the ability to predict multiple potential outcomes, consider other people’s thoughts and desires, and adapt your own emotions and actions.”(“WhyIs Emotional Intelligence Important?”, 2020)Two different tasks listed in the Victim Advocate job description are: counseling crime victims/witnesses and resolving conflict.
