Developmental Issue Child abuse and neglect, although are not disorders themselves, can cause significant psychological problems. These problems range from low self-esteem, behavioral problems, substance abuse, and development of other disorders such as depression, suicidal, PTSD, and aggressive behaviors. Child abuse is a broad term. This can include emotional, physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. Shaken baby syndrome, for example, is a form of physical abuse that can result in mental retardation, hearing problems, visual problems, learning disabilities, and cognitive dysfunction. If the abuse and neglect is severe enough to create significant trauma, the effects could result in the development of Dissociative Identity Disorder. Dissociative identity disorder is an uncommon disorder that is often times seen when a child’s psychological development is disrupted by repetitive trauma in early adolescence. Child abuse related developmental deficits would be considered atypical development in nature, due to the development not following what is deemed to be the “normal course”. Population Child abuse is a global epidemic that produces catastrophic life-long struggles for those who are exposed to it. The issues range from diminished cognitive development, developmental delays, and as I already stated, can result in numerous mental health disorders. Children as young as newborns can be identified as part of the population that is impacted my child abuse and neglect, and the results of the abuse and neglect can follow them through out their entire lives. The resulting impact of abuse and neglect will not always be visual immediately.

Issues resulting from abuse and neglect can begin to show face at different points in life. Learning problems, peer rejection, social anxiety, depression, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, aggression, dissociative identity disorder, PTSD, etc. These potential problems often take time to be visually identifiable, and as children grow into adults, they will likely continue to show increased risk of substance abuse, psychiatric disorders, serious illness, and more.Sociocultural Impact Although this is a worldwide issue, I’ve taken a closer look at child abuse and neglect within the United States.

According to National Children’s Alliance’s National Statistics On Child Abuse (2019), nearly 700,000 children are abused on an annual basis. In 2015, 683,000children were victims of both abuse and neglect. Children with the highest rate of victimization  were those who were a year old or younger. The first five years of a child’s life are fundamentally important for brain development. Early brain development has significant influence on the child’s abilities to learn and be successful in not just childhood, but school, and their entire life. The methods and intervention in the Achievements Program would vary from what the developmental theory would support and recommend. This is due to the disagreement on the behavior-focused approach and developmental-focused approach. Since the Achievements Program utilizes the Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention, it automatically falls under the favor of the behavior-focused approach. Kennedy Krieger Institute (2021) mentioned that an example of a behavioral method is routines-based teaching utilized in structured activities that promote important activities while mastering the new skill by repetition.

Different In the Achievements Program there is something called Achievements Groups. These groups are run by a certified speech-language pathologist and therapeutic assistant where theme-based learning activities take place for children to gain mastery in language, social, and cognitive skills while also motivating children to target individualized goals (Kennedy Krieger Institute,2021). Also, there are different NDBI models that combine developmental theory and ABA, like the Pivotal Response Treatment (Minjarez, Bruinsma, & Stahmer, 2020). Other models and methods either compose of a manual or an intervention. Minjarez, Bruinsma, & Stahmer (2020)note the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) meets this criterion and is a comprehensive treatment model for children with ASD.Sociocultural Evaluation: Indicators Kennedy Krieger Institute is in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. region and is internationally recognized for improving the lives of thousands of children, adolescents, and adults with developmental, neurological, or rehabilitative needs (Kennedy Krieger Institute,2021).
